The (many) Benefits of Karate for Kids

The (Many) Benefits of Karate for Kids

Children’s Karate classes are an amazing way to improve the lives of the children themselves, their families and the communities. This is because of the values and life skills that martial arts impart to children.

Courage

Being brave is not about being fearless. It is about rising up and acting even if you are scared or have doubt. Good karate practice involves understanding fear and developing the courage needed for a student to set boundaries, or to set goals and overcome challenges that life will inevitably throw at them.

Respect

Through studying Karate, children are taught to respect those who came before them (Sensei), those more experienced than them (their Senpai) and the people who are their juniors (Kohai). Quality karate programs focus on children taking these lessons home and applying them to all aspects of their lives. A respectful attitude translates outside the Dojo – to School teachers, parents, siblings, friends & peers.

Leadership

Karate training encourages young leaders to develop, grow and contribute within their communities. We teach children how to be responsible, patient, communicative, dependable. Students of all ages learn how to communicate effectively, work well with and lead others.

Self-Discipline

Karate teaches children that discipline goes beyond respect for authority, family and community. Our program delivers self-discipline through respect and mastery of self. In martial arts, this includes the ability to control one’s emotions and short-term desires while working toward more meaningful long-term goals.

Confidence

Nothing feels better than working hard towards a goal and then seeing yourself succeed. At T.I.M.E., children get the chance to experience this first hand. We have seen under-confident “shy kids” transform as they discover their self worth is not tied up in comparisons with others. They learn their own strengths and weaknesses, and learn how to trust themselves – setting them up for success. This quiet sense of self confidence allows them to persist, to keep working hard, and ultimately to achieve goals they may think are difficult or too hard.

At T.I.M.E., we teach children the correct way to fail. We help them understand they may not always be ‘the best’ at something, and may not win the race, be ranked no.1 at school, or pass their karate belt test. They may have days when they struggle at home, or days at the dojo when they struggle to learn a new kick. Kids in karate learn to be resilient, to develop a ‘growth’ mindset, and view failure as an opportunity to get better. These kids will have the confidence to be more adventurous when they don’t see failure as something to fear.

Focus & Concentration

The unique mental and physical challenges that martial arts has on people requires focus and concentration from students. To correctly learn a complex technique or Kata (martial arts form) you need to be able to concentrate for extended periods of time and channel your energy in the right way. Of course, focus is needed for success beyond the dojo, as well. When kids learn this skill in their martial arts class, they can begin to apply it to homework, school studies, and even planning future goals as they move into adulthood.

Physical Fitness

Like other sports, karate helps people of all ages to become physically fit. Children in particular learn to value the quality of being strong, healthy and flexible. Kids Karate classes often include cardio workouts (like bag work or obstacle courses), strength training (like squats or push-ups), and flexibility (stretching before/at the end of classes). A fit and healthy body has been proven to have an impact on a child’s energy levels, the ability to concentrate, their moods and sleep patterns.

Character Development

Most parents enrol their children in karate to learn self defence, but seldom realise the trans-formative benefits which come from consistent martial arts training. These benefits stay with kids as they grow – empowering them to succeed in all areas of their lives as teens and adults. We believe that above all, it is the character-building aspects of our program that uniquely set each child up to be successful – loving and respectful members of their families, leaders in their communities, happy and healthy, resilient and productive at school and at work, and ultimately – winning at life.

““The ultimate aim of Karate lies not in victory or defeat, but in the perfection of character of its participants””
